RIECCOMI

Carissimi,

A Muscat è successo poco negli ultimi giorni.

Two international footballers, including the UAE’s star striker Faisal Khalil, have been arrested on suspicion of practising “black magic” and casting spells against other players. Khalil and Subait Khater were arrested in Dubai with two Omani “sorcerers” at the end of last month. Khalil, who plays for Al Ahli, and Khater, of Al Jazira, are believed to have paid the Omanis to make spells in order to maintain their places in the national team. Detectives in Dubai were investigating the Omanis when they discovered their alleged ties to footballers. “Khalil along with Subait Khater and two Omani spell casters, or magicians, have been arrested,” a spokesman for Dubai CID confirmed yesterday. According to The Sun, Khalil and Khater were practising an Omani form of magic, similar to African “JuJu”, that could include animal sacrifices, self-mutilation, the casting of spells, the use of lucky charms and odious concoctions. Police sources say Khalil, 25, and Khater, 28, instructed the Omani sorceress to cast spells against Ismail Matar, 25, who plays for Al Wahda, and Ismail al Hammadi, 20, who plays for Al Ahli. Dubai Sports Council said it did not believe the arrests were part of a wider problem of “black magic” in football. “This is a one-off incident and the practice isn’t prevalent in UAE football. It’s the players’ personal choice to use black magic and very much their own decision,” said the council’s spokesman. The council is yet to hear about formal charges. “All that we know is that they were arrested for practising witchcraft”. The attempted use of “black magic” to gain advantage in football has been reported as widespread in African nations. Footballers in sub-Saharan Africa have been known to using elephant teeth, monkey heads and the organs of other endangered species to caste spells or concoct potions hoping to gain advantage on the pitch. Early this year 13 people were reportedly killed when a riot ensued after a player attempted to use witchcraft on the opposition in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nyuki were losing to local rivals Socozaki last month when Nyuki’s goalkeeper advanced up the pitch and tried to caste a spell that would turn the game in his side’s favour. In 1998, all 11 members of a football team were killed by a bolt of lightning which left the other team unhurt in the same country . The Kinshasa newspaper L’Avenir, which reported the incident, said that locals suspected a curse had been placed on the team by a witch-doctor.
